When preparing for Easter this year, don’t forget your cats! You may not be dressing them in their Sunday best and heading out for the local Easter Egg hunt, but there’s still plenty of feline-friendly Easter fun to be had at home. Make sure the Easter Bunny visits your kitties with these four cat-safe goodies.
Puzzlin’ Eggs
Take advantage of the widely-available plastic Easter eggs around this time of year and turn them into puzzle feeders for your kitty. Put a few pieces of kibble inside a plastic egg, and roll it across the floor for your cat – they’ll pounce and chase it to everyone’s delight! It should pop open after a pounce or two and give them access to the goodies. Supervise your kitty’s play time with this toy to ensure the plastic doesn’t break – it’s important they don’t eat any plastic by accident. It’s the Easter gift for your cat that will keep on giving!
Edible Grass
Eggs and chicks and baskets are necessities for Easter – and so is Easter grass! There’s just one problem though: these crinkle-cut bits of paper or plastic in bright greens and pinks are way too tempting for your kitty to eat. One moment, you’re taking adorable Easter ‘grams and the next you’re at the vet with a bowel obstruction.
Go natural when putting together your cat’s Easter basket – you can fill it with catnip, or even a bed of cat grass. You can grow your own catnip – check your local garden center for young plants or order seeds online – and find cat grass kits at pet stores that will get you started growing a variety of rye, barley, and oat for your kitties’ safe nibbling.
It may take a little planning or an extra stop at the garden center, but lining an Easter basket with catnip or cat grass is sure to enrich your cats’ holiday.
Batters Up
To complete the catification of all your Easter goodies, the basket itself can become part of an impromptu cat toy. All you need to do is hang a soft toy – maybe a soft, catnip-stuffed bunny or chick with a feathery tail – from the handle on your Easter basket, assuming it’s large and sturdy enough. And that’s it! Your kitty has a hanging toy to bat at as she’s rolling around in her catnip or taking a break from munching on cat grass.
Themed Toys
If you enjoy shopping for your kitties, consider selecting a number of themed toys and treats this spring! You can find egg-shaped catnip balls – some even come with an embedded LED light and feather tails for added interest. There are bunny-shaped soft toys out there and, while you may not find a chick-shaped toy, you can definitely find feathered bird-shaped toys. You can even catnip toys in the shape of giant carrots! And Easter is a great time to get new food bowls in spring pastel colors with floral designs.
Just Say No
There are a few precautions you should take around Easter time, especially if you like to keep flowers around the house or have children opening their own Easter baskets. It’s important to know that Easter lilies are incredibly toxic to your cat – even the pollen can make your cat seriously ill. Don’t bring these flowers into the home you share with cats!
Make sure your cats don’t get into any chocolate or other candy meant for humans as these substances could make your kitty sick as well. And don’t let them run off with any small toys that might be small enough for them to eat, or that might break easily into smaller pieces they could swallow.
