Halloween is a very special time for cat lovers. For one, it’s a time during which we get to peruse through all the decorations at Target and Spirit Halloween in search of all the cat-related chachkas we can get our dirty paws on. Secondly, it’s also a time when our cats get the respect they deserve for the mystical, enigmatic creatures they are. I say this, of course, while my own cat licks her but just 2 feet away from me. Yes, Marzipan, I see you. Very impressive, thank you.
Now, what better way to celebrate these mystical, enigmatic beings than by scoping out some horror movies centered around our feline stars? Excellent query! Coming up blank? Think you’ve seen it all? Do not fret, my fellow witches and warlocks – I’m here to help. Herein you’ll find an indubitable profusion of spooky scary cinematic stories that will simultaneously spoop you to the core while satiating your need for a feline fix!
Cat People
For our first feline-centric flick, let’s journey all the way back to 1942 with Jacques Tourneur’s Cat People. In this old timey sound film (or “talkie”, as the kids back then called it), a young Serbian woman named Irena fears for her husband’s life, for she believes that she is the victim of an old family curse that will cause her to turn into a wild, bloodthirsty cat whenever she loses her grip over her emotions. Of course, being a vintage film, you won’t get to sink your teeth into any astounding special effects, but something can certainly be said for dramatic tension. Like the dramatic tension when you missed dinner time by 2 minutes and Miss Honeymuffin is about to turn into something wild and bloodthirsty herself.
Cat’s Eye
Stephen King’s 1985 film Cat’s Eye is a three-for-one story centered around a brave little kitty on a mission. That mission is to protect a young girl named Amanda from an evil troll living in her bedroom. However, while our feline hero is on his way to his damsel in distress, his journey is interrupted not once, but twice; first, by a doctor who uses a devious method of “helping” his patients to quit smoking. Second, by a suspicious millionaire who’s up to something no bueno (no spoilers!) Will our furry protagonist succeed?
Pet Sematary
Speaking of Stephen King, Master Of The Spooks, how could I leave out the indisputable classic, Pet Sematary? Indeed, I could not, and so I shan’t! Pet Sematary follows Louis Creed and his family who’ve just moved into their new home. Everything’s perfect… except, of course, the heckin’ creepy pet cemetery behind their house. The true nature of this cemetery is “brought to life” (hehe) when Jud, Louis Creed’s new friend, resurrects his cat Church after he’s hit by a car. The procedure works, but something’s different and not quite right about Church… (insert dramatic 80s music here.)
The Uncanny
Y’all like anthologies? Then I’ve got just the movie for you. The Uncanny is a British horror film released in 1977 which follows three different stories meant to illustrate the “demonic” nature of cats. In the first tale, a wealthy old woman named Miss Malkin decides to leave her entire fortune to her cats. (Heck yeah, Miss Malkin!) Incensed by this, her maid, Janet, destroys the will and murders Miss Malkin. (Rude.) What happens next is a bone-chilling account of sweet sweet revenge. The next two tales follow similar situations in which vengeance is harvested in spades. Do these stories accurately illustrate the claim that cats are demonic, or did the perpetrators get what was coming to them?
The Cat With Hands
Try as I might, I couldn’t consider this list complete without giving this short film an honorable mention. At only three and a half minutes long, The Cat With Hands is a chilling tale about a cat who steals body parts from people… and then eats them. You can watch the entirety of the film on YouTube, and thank me later for the nightmares.
So, what do you think? Will you be adding these kitty-filled horror films to your Halloween collection this year? Nothing gets you in the mood for a All Hallows’ Eve like snuggling up with your beloved baby button and enjoying a good screamfest!
The 1982 movie “Cat People” with Nastassia Kinski and Malcolm McDowell is creepy as heck!
