As soon as I came across Memphis on Instagram, I knew I had to feature him as February’s Special Kitty. Memphis was born with two noses, which is a condition that is rarely highlighted when talking about animal adoption in general. Many people initially shy away from animals with deformities like this, but there is no reason to; Memphis as well as other kitties like him are awesome companions to have. I’m so happy to have had the chance to find out more about Memphis from his mom, Tara, from the Odd Cat Sanctuary!

Life in Massachusetts

Before Tara rescued Memphis, he had an owner who loved him, but was unable to care for him anymore.

“Memphy was going to be euthanized last March in MA. His owner who loved him could no longer keep him & all area shelters said they would put him to sleep. One of my volunteers overheard this was happening and texted me to see if we would take him on. I said yes right away. The Odd Cat Sanctuary saved his life!”

Memphy’s New Life

Many people think prior to adopting cats with special needs that they will face major limitations but in Memphis’ case, this is not true!

“He does not face any limitations, he’s just like any other cat, although he does look unique with his smush face and two noses! He does have some quirks related to his born facial abnormalities, though. He gets daily boogers in his right nostril, his eyes have some discharge each morning that I wipe away, and he gets a snaggletooth quite often due to having 6 canines!”

Memphis is quite a cool cat, in fact his Instagram account has gathered over 100K followers! Not too shabby for a social media star that doesn’t have opposable thumbs! When Memphis is not busy being a social media star, he’s an amazing companion to his human and his special needs brothers and sisters.

“He acts like he was born here! He’s best buddies with the resident cats & dogs. Memphy loves cat trees, singing the song of his people, catnip, any toys and snuggling with me. Memphis does not really love being picked up, but he will let me,” Tara told us. “His biggest quirk is singing and squawking to get your attention then once you do, he stops immediately. He will chirp nonstop until you pay attention to him!”

Tara describes Memphis as an old soul who has been through so much for only being on the planet for four years. This seems to be the case with a lot of shelter kitties. Tara is a huge advocate for adoption considering she founded the Odd Cat Sanctuary!

“I started The Odd Cat Sanctuary almost 4 years ago to have a space for special needs cats to go. Always take a chance on a special kitty. But do it for the right reasons. I only see ups! I would encourage people to make a difference by adopting. It’s such an amazing feeling to be able to give a forever home to a pet in need. Rescue cats are so thankful.”

We strongly encourage you to adopt if you are thinking of becoming an animal parent. Every kitty is special and unique and their own way, and it is always rewarding to take a chance on one in a shelter, and provide them with the home they deserve.
